I have troubles playing a video with any of video players. After opening it says play with Media Player and it directs me to the Microsoft Codec Installation Package, but I don't want to download it from there cuz my Windows is not geniune. Any tricks or any links for Codec Installation Package?

Which version of Windows are you using?
Try the windows codec pack by sharky.

Or use Gom Player.

Well, for best image quality as well as performance I would recommend using the Media Player Classic HC inkl. in the K-Lite Codec Pack (HP: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm but seems actually down/beeing upgraded) with either DXVA or CoreAVCv2+Cuda and taking a look into http://nunnally.ahmygoddess.net/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva/ for configuration.

K-lite also contained a trojan.

The Shark Codec Pack is worth looking at, but generally speaking never ad codecs unless you need them.

Also if your running Win Vista or higher beware of the FFDshow problem with k-lite.

Also I don't know of any actuall problems with ffdshow using k-lite packs under vista (or 7 as i do).

Hm, may I am wrong but all posts I see regarding a problem with ffdshow on vista are from 2007?

For me I have used it with vista and 7 without such problems for quite some time. The only ones I had was that i needed to reinstall the pack when installing certain tools that broke the codecs by k-lite.

Either if the problem would still exist under certain conditions, there seem to be several solutions so don't get me wrong but I can't see a real issue.

It's just an example of one of the many over sites in the pack, the rest can be noticed when using high end video production tools.

As a general guideline don't install codec's you don't need.

But to each their own.

On win 7 the only codec I have needed to install is RealAlt so far the rest has all run on gom, I intend to keep it that way for a long time to come.

There are a long list of reasons but with out getting into a 30 page diatribe on the subject suffice to say I have worked with conversion engines and video codecs for some large companies and know a "little" on the subject - But if I was going to recommend a pack - http://shark007.net/ I would also recommend using G-Spot Codec Appliance to get specific needed codecs, before trashing your system with home grown stuff in packs which is not always of the best developer standards.

But like I said to each their own

oh and some tv cards may be affected by codec packs, so always remember to reinstall any noise codec tweaks again after you install a codec pack.
