I never figured out the advantage of HBC over modchip...I installed a Wiikey2 on mine and it works great...what does HBC do?

Well Soft Modding Versus Hard Modding, is all about risk versus ease of use.
Cutting and soldering runs a risk of killing your hardware, and what if later firmware detects said mod.
Soft moding can be as easy as simply putting in a CD and an exploited mem card.
There is no correct answer really, because both methods work so it usually comes down to cost and personal preference.

Oops, I probably should have mentioned that HBC, is the HomeBrew Channel, Home Brew is code written by others that can run on hacked wii's its also where you usually find soft hacks, mods, and free software that other people have written for various consoles.
The strict definition of Home Brew is any application written for a game console, that has been created by home or fan users not using the official development gear of that console.

Well technically its modification of any kind, is againt the fair usage policy, no one has taken this to court, due to the fact that telling people what to do with something they own, is a line of defense a billion dollar corporation does not want to test in court.
Secondly, market analysis has proven that if your Game Console gets hacked about a year into its release, you sell 3 times the number of consoles.
You dont want a mod too early, because it scares off developers, with no developers there are no games and no market for the console.
Its all a balancing game really. (but modding is technically a breach in terms)

Well there has never been a Console company that has attacked Home Brew Creators, some have even embrassed allowing home brew like wario ware and so on for the wii, making it affordable for home users to develop like big game houses.
Killing people in court for making Fan Applications for your platform would never go well with a jury.
So while Running Code intended to be blocked is a shade of grey, You wont have to worry about a nasty letter from Sony or Nintendo if your making apps and games via home brew.
You will get grief from them if you make an application that helps circumvent copy protection.
Its also because main developers pay huge $$$ for "official" development hardware, and they get a bit pissed when some guy sitting at home on his celeron makes a better game than them having spent maybe $9 when they spend $ 90 000 on hardware.
