Charlie finally tells Alan the truth about why he broke up with Mia, and a famous neighbor causes problems.
Alan feels guilty when he learns that Charlie and Mia didn't tie the knot because she had wanted him and Jake to move out. Meanwhile, Charlie and his rock star neighbor don't get along.

After nearly drowning, Charlie is convinced he saw his late father.
Charlie attempts surfing in order to impress a beautiful girl -- with disastrous results. He later tells Alan that when his life was hanging in the balance, their deceased father came to him and made a request that Charlie's loath to fulfill.

Alan and Kandi become embroiled in an unconventional custody battle.
Alan is determined to gain custody of his and Kandi's dog after she walks away from their split with both the condo and the car. Having also lost everything to Judith following their divorce, Alan decides to hire the best lawyer he knows -- hers.

4x05 - A Live Woman of Proven Fertility
Alan and Charlie bond with Judith's new fianc in an effort to improve his relationship with Jake.
Alan is overjoyed that he'll no longer owe Judith alimony when she marries Herb. When their marriage plans are threatened due to Jake's disdain for his soon-to-be stepfather, Alan enlists Charlie's help to keep Herb from getting cold feet.

4x06 - Apologies for the Frivolity
Charlie cannot see that he's dating a younger version of his mother.
Though Charlie despises his sharp tongued, passive aggressive mother, he's strangely attracted to Lydia, an attractive, blonde high-end real estate agent -- just like his mother. Unfortunately, the similarities don't end there, and the relationship begins to seem a little too familiar for comfort.

4x07 - Repeated Blows To His Unformed Head
Charlie helps Berta confront the man who impregnated her daughter, while Alan indulges an unusual fetish.
When Berta brings her pregnant daughter -- the one she thought would make something of herself -- to Charlie's house to help clean, Alan gets to satisfy one of his secret fetishes. Meanwhile, Charlie ventures out of his familiar Malibu surroundings and gets to see the other side of the tracks when Berta drags him with her to deal with the guy who knocked up her little girl.

4x08 - Release the Dogs
Alan seeks a cure for his insomnia, while Charlie pursues the mother of Jake's new girlfriend.
Unable to sleep, Alan takes one of Charlie's suggestions and goes for a jog on the beach. His jog takes a disastrous turn, so he next turns to a psychiatrist in the hopes that discovering the source of his insomnia will help alleviate it. Meanwhile, Jake pleads with Charlie not to date the hot mother of a girl he likes.

4x09 - Corey's Been Dead For An Hour
Ladies' man Charlie and tightwad Alan go on a double date, leaving Jake home alone for the first time.
Charlie becomes annoyed with Alan for constantly sponging off him and promising to cover the tab "next time." When Alan tries to leave Charlie with the check after dinner with two pretty women, Charlie tries to beat him at his own game. Meanwhile, Jake gets to see what it's like to be home alone.
