25. The Richest Man In Walnut Grove

When the mill closes due to bankruptcy, Charles loses out on two months worth of crucial wages that would have officially cleared his account at the mercantile. With a large bill left unpaid and Harriet Oleson spreading rumors about the Ingalls' financial issues, Charles takes on several odd jobs at once. Mary quits school temporarily to work overtime with seamstress Mrs. Whipple, while Laura does all the chores and assists Caroline with the crops. Laura comes home in tears when Charles' current working situation becomes the target of Nellie and Willie's most recent teasing, but Charles comforts her in his assurance that there is no shame in performing a job--any job at all--with true dignity. Sufficient funds are finally raised, and the Ingalls' debt is finally lifted at the mercantile. Nels Oleson is inspired by watching this loving family work together to meet a moral responsibility, and he personally declares Charles the richest man in Walnut Grove.
26. Four Eyes
First aired: 9/17/1975
As Mary risks failing school, everyone is oblivious to the real problem until Charles realizes that she cannot read from far distances. Mary is initially thrilled when Charles buys her very first pair of glasses, but the excitement is spoiled when classmates begin to tease her. Overwhelmed by the hurtful comments, Mary pretends to lose her glasses--but there just might be something out there to give her a change of heart!
27. Haunted House
First aired: 10/8/1975
Laura goes into a haunted house when Nellie dares her to do it. She becomes a friend of the old man that lives there, Mr. Pike. She finds out that he is waiting for his wife to return. After Laura learns that Mrs. Pike died years ago, she helps Mr. Pike cope with the death of his wife.
28. In The Big Inning
First aired: 10/1/1975
It's time for baseball! After losing badly last year, Walnut Grove expects to win with their star pitcher, Mr. Mumford. People in Walnut Grove are so confident that they are going to win, they place bets on the game. However, Mr. Mumford's wife won't let her husband play because of the gambling. Caroline convinces Mr. Mumford's wife to let her husband play on the condition that any money made from the game goes to the church.

29. The Campout

When Ms. Beadle assigns a leaf-gathering project to her students, Mary and Laura are excited to find all kinds of unique leaves on an upcoming camping trip with the family. Determined to see her own children receive equal opportunities, Harriet convinces her husband to let their famile tag along with the Ingalls'. Although the two families have a difficult time adjusting to this extended period of time together, they gradually come to have a deeper respect for one another--but that doesn't mean that Nellie, Willie, and Harriet won't be traveling home with a less-than-desirable surprise.
30. The Spring Dance
First aired: 10/29/1975
Laura and Grace Snider are both in low spirits when they are left with no dates for the spring dance. Feeling that Grace is underappreciated by Isaiah Edwards, Caroline uses memories of her courtship with Charles to provide her friend with strategies to make Isaiah jealous. Laura overhears their conversation and applies it to her own experiences--so while Grace devotes her time to "wooing" Doc Baker, Laura poses as Willie Oleson's girlfriend to earn the attention of a boy at school. When their ruthless attempts backfire and the dance draws nearer, Caroline recognizes the foolishness of her advice and encourages the girls to make the move themselves.
31. Remember Me (1)
First aired: 11/5/1975
After Doc Baker gives ailing widow Julia Sanderson a disheartening health prognosis, the woman scrambles to find a home for her three young children. She enlists Charles' help to find just the right couple, and when it appears that she will not survive long enough to finish the job, Julia asks Charles to make the final decision. Meanwhile, Mary and Laura, who rescued some newborn puppies after someone dumped them in the creek, have a responsibility of their own: to find adequate homes for the three adorable pups.
32. Remember Me (2)
First aired: 11/12/1975
Immediately following Julia's emotional funeral, Charles begins working to honor her final request. As John, Carl, and Alicia board temporarily with Mr. Edwards and Grace, Charles is approached by a gruff man and his wife, who are interested only in the two boys as farmhands. Charles initially refuses to entertain any idea of separating these siblings, but matters are complicated when Harriet Oleson's wealthy, single cousin wishes to adopt Alicia. Charles is opposed by many--including his cherished daughter Laura--when he decides to split the children between the two homes. Angered by these developments and determined to improve the quality of his own life, Mr. Edwards marries Grace immediately, and they adopt the children themselves.

33. Ebenezer Sprague

When Walnut Grove builds its very first bank, Charles clashes with the cold and heartless banker Mr. Sprague, who refuses to give him a crucial loan. Mr. Sprague and Laura meet at the fishing pond and develop a gradual friendship, each of them blatantly unaware of the other's identity. When Mr. Sprague discovers who Laura is, he alienates her--but the consequences of his actions help him recognize the source of his lonely existence.
34. At The End Of The Rainbow
First aired: 12/10/1975
While fishing in a stream, Laura and a friend discover something shiny in the water. Believing that it is gold, Laura and Jonah take many secret trips to this spot to gather it all. Laura fantasizes about all the wonderful things she can afford for her family, but when she and Jonah haul their findings to the bank, they are both heartbroken and humiliated to learn that it is only "fool's gold." Laura feels that she has disappointed the people she loves, but Charles has an important lesson to teach her about what he and Caroline really value in their children.
35. The Gift
First aired: 12/17/1975
As Reverend Alden's birthday approaches, the Sunday school children vote to buy him a brand-new Bible. Mary is elected to order the gift, but Laura talks her into attempting to double the money by purchasing and selling a box of various medicines around town. When the plan backfires and the Sunday school fund is completely spent, the Ingalls girls must admit their mistake to Reverend Alden.
36. His Father's Son
First aired: 1/7/1976
Isaiah and Grace Edwards are both delighted with their new family, but trouble soon begins between Isaiah and his oldest adopted son John. The boy is clearly an extremely intelligent child who loves reading and writing poetry, but Isaiah--who cannot relate to any of this--tries to push his timid new son into the farming and hunting business by purchasing him a rifle for his birthday. John does not have the heart to shoot any living creature, but Isaiah attempts to ignore this by planning a one-on-one hunting trip anyway. They come across a violent bear in the woods, and John--who is shocked and paralyzed with fear--watches in horror as the animal attacks Isaiah, leaving him very close to death. While the family awaits the man's fate, John is convinced that he will never have what it takes to be Isaiah's son--but a crucial piece of information from Charles may be just the ticket to help John finally connect with his adoptive father.

Nellie and Laura both begin clamoring for the affections of a boy at school. Angered when Jason indicates a preference for Laura over her, Nellie attempts to sabotage their relationship by using her brand-new talking machine as a malicious tool for blackmail.
38. The Pride Of Walnut Grove
First aired: 1/28/1976
Mary is thrilled to learn that she has qualified for a state-wide mathematics competition, but the excitement is halted when Charles cannot afford the expenses for the trip. When Mary silently forfeits, the school board recognizes the problem (with a little heads-up from Laura, that is) and agrees to finance the whole thing. Caroline accompanies Mary on the trip, while Laura steps in at home to care for both Charles and Carrie. Mary laments over her success in the competition, and little Laura struggles with feelings of inadequacy against her older sister, but everyone is about to learn the value of pulling it together and doing their very best.
39. A Matter Of Faith
First aired: 2/4/1976
Caroline decides to stay home while Charles takes the girls on a trip, but her special alone time is aggravated when a minor scratch on her leg flares into a major infection. Alone and with no immediate help available, a fiercely ill Caroline turns to the Bible for comfort-- only to stumble upon the words "And if thy leg offends thee, cut it off...." Caroline is close to death when Charles finally gets home to her, and it will take every ounce of faith that this family possesses as they anxiously await her fate.
40. The Runaway Caboose
First aired: 2/11/1976
Mary, Laura, and Mr. Edwards' adopted son, Carl, go along with Charles and Mr. Edwards to a train station. The three children wander into the caboose. The caboose then begins to move backwards, going faster and faster. Another train is coming the opposite direction...

When Miss Beadle's classroom management gradually deteriorates, the school board decides to hire a male instructor in her place. The mean-spirited Mr. Applewood immediately clashes with Laura, blaming her unfairly for several incidents in the classroom. The situation flares out of control, resulting in Laura's shocking expulsion, and the school board is prompted to re-evaluate their decision. When Mr. Applewood's true colors are revealed to the adults, they consider hiring back Miss Beadle--but it will take some help from the schoolchildren to make that happen.
42 The Long Road Home
First aired: 3/3/1976 Production Code: 2017
Charles, Mr. Edwards, and two other men take a job that involves handling and transporting explosives. They must deal with many things along the road, including prejudice.
43 For My Lady
First aired: 3/10/1976 Production Code: 2020
When Charles agrees to do some handy work for Widow Thurman, he forfeits any monetary compensation and works instead for Thurman's old china set--a gift that he knows Caroline would love. This does require some sneakiness on Charles' part, and as he spends increasing amounts of time at Widow Thurman's house, Mary and Laura are concerned. While Caroline struggles to maintain trust in her husband, Mrs. Oleson offers her own unsettling suspicions, but everyone gets a big surprise when Charles returns home with a special delivery.

The Independence Day celebration in Walnut Grove is threatened when taxes are increased. A Russian immigrant shows the people why America is a great place. Even though the immigrant lost his land since he couldn't pay his taxes, he was happy to be in America. He considered it to be the best place to live in the world.
45. Soldier's Return
First aired: 3/24/1976
Mrs. Whipple is absolutely delighted when her beloved son Granville--her only child--returns home after fighting in the Civil War. Granville adjusts quickly in Walnut Grove and thrives through the music classes that he teaches for various children in town, but the psychological devastation of war aggravates a deep morphine addiction that may threaten his life.
46. Going Home
First aired: 3/31/1976
After a tornado ruins his crop, Charles decides to sell the land and return to the Big Woods of Wisconsin without consulting his family.
